WARNER HOME VIDEO said it intends to cut the price of some DVD films in China in a bid to cut piracy.
The outfit inked a deal with Paramount and Dreamworks Animation to flog DVDs, priced at 22 yuan ($2.90 dollars) in China. The first two films to be released under the terms of the deal are called Transformers" and Shrek the Third.
Mark Horak, a Warner veep, reckoned the move "further strengthens our efforts in building a legitimate video business in China.
"By providing a wide selection of high-quality, competitively priced DVDs, we will be offering consumers a more attractive alternative to lower-quality pirated products," he said in a statement.
The same statement has Dennis Maguire, president of Paramount Home Entertainment International, adding: "Warner has demonstrated that securing key outlets in China is necessary to supplant pirated content with legitimate products to fight piracy in the market."
As we're constantly being told piracy is a worldwide problem, hopefully these crap films will soon be more reasonably priced everywhere else. And the music industry will follow suit.
One nil to the pirates. µ
If the studios are so hell bent on blaming piracy for their losses, why don't we see movies for 2.90 here in the states? If they can make a profit from a 2.90 DVD in China, then the same profit should be available here.

What a load of crap!
Trying to combat piracy by lowering prices on a piece of crap is not going to work well, and Shrek III is nothing but crap.
Transformers is going to appeal to a niche market, so that's a bit different, but frankly put, I wouldn't pay to see Shrek III, you'd have to pay me.
So I'm not impressed.
Please apply that policy to Indonesia :). It will work charmed better than using super duper MGA (Movie Genuine Advantage). :)). By the way, why Microsoft didn't sue movie industri because they use the same WGA term =)) (of course Microsoft First use it).
china isnt the only place there is piracy, in australia we have to pay 39 odd dollars for a dvd, thats why there is Piracy, people say stuff this and go download it for nothing, time to stop being greedy movie and music studios and start being reasonable, thats all they want you know, REASONABLE PRICES
How much time did it take for them to realize that there was no way they could win the war against piracy with dumb-ass law suits?

RIAA!! Are you reading?! YOU MORONS!

Cheers.
And you can bet they're still making a profit on each one.

Gives you a rough idea how they can afford all those lawyers doesn't it.
So, piracy in the rest of the world isn't a problem then?
Well it's good to see they're pricing media at what it really costs to produce. I'm skeptical that it will spread to other countries, or music and software.

Would be nice, though.

Cheers,
John
They should have taken a look at what Radiohead did.Half the people that took the goods didn't pay anything at all.
This splits the world into 2 types of people.
Those that pay and those that don't.

Those that pay, don't mind doing so , and dropping prices, whilst pleasing for them, wont stop them continuing to pay.
However , those that thieve, still wont pay , no matter how cheep you make things. They are thieves and they will still go on thieving ,even it the product was free. For them its not about the price , its just about price. You wont ever get money out of them , and they wont change their practices.they are a lost generation.
Great, so they cut the price of their DVDs in China! Now how about cutting DVD prices in the US, instead of continuing to suck dry the domestic market, you useless parasitical Bolsheviks!
I highly doubt prices will change anywhere else. I'd even be surprised to hear this story outside of the INQ.

$2.90? How do they justify DVD prices in the USA, where it's $20 a pop? Perhaps to cover shipping costs from China to the USA?

And I've got $50 that says the RIAA will never follow suit. Any takers?
