AMD fabs to be funded by Arabian money

Plans in New York State go ahead, whatever
Tuesday, 26 February 2008, 20:39

RELIABLE SOURCES tell me – and AMD refuses to comment on the rumor so far – that Abu Dhabi money is about to save its fab bacon.

This move, if and when it happens, will relieve AMD of a pile of debts it owes, and give it the space, time and money to open a new fab in Malta, New York State, because the company have plans to go for that, big time.

We contacted AMD repeatedly about this story. So far they haven’t got back to me. It would be a coup, although Arabian money might not necessarily go down well in New York State. Asset Lite? µ

Money's money...

Arabian money, especially from the UAE is much less sensitive than, say, Iranian, Syrian, or Lybian money. The UAE maintains a good relationship with the US and I don't think it would be a problem.

Plus, as long as we're not talking about a takeover, this is just an investment.

thank god

I don't care where the damn money comes from...I'm 20 minutes south of Malta, and a solid computer science\engineering degree would go nicely with a world class fab freshly built by a tech company with some money and real innovation, right up the highway. Rock on.

Yet another great divide

I must applaud the Guv of Abu Dhabi and their gracious donation to keep everyone on the even, and help maintain the status quo of competition. This might also have been a direct jab at Intel, who has fabs in Israel. I'm guessing that future AMD plans will also include a plant somewhere in the vicinity of Abu Dhabi, if not in the UAE as a whole (no shortage of silicon either heh).

If NY State doesn't approve of the situation, AMD can say "See ya later, I'm off to UAE to build my nice shiny 4 billion dollar plant!" With the rediculously cheap labour to be found from expatriots in the UAE I'm sure they would save some cash as well. If I was an employee with AMD, I'd have no problems working in the UAE, as they are the most progressive (can't really count Bahrain as it's just a citystate) of all the Muslim states in the Middle East.

And yes, I've just been to Dubai (amazing skyline) and I am about to go to Abu Dhabi, so I've seen first hand what a bajillion US$ for oil can do for a country in less than 40 years.

Been here before

Don't you remember the Inq article 'Abu Dhabi to buy nine per cent of AMD' from 16 November 2007?

Awesome Move AMD

I definitely applaud AMD for this move. If NY does not approve of this then it will be a big loss for them.

Not For Me

Now I know I will stay with Intel and Nvidia, they are better anyway.

I doesn't take much

It doesn't take much for AMD to move into New York. All AMD requires is gobs of Middle East cash and the New York Attorney General to make noise against Intel, then it will move into new digs in New York. What a racket.

AG Will Not Mess Up The Deal

You got it all wrong, the NY AG is Andrew Cuomo , his father was EX NY Gov Mario Cuomo, Andrew is already suing Intel for Intel's illegal business practices to AMD , Andrew is in need of bolstering his political image in route for NYS Gov

You don't think he wants to bring jobs back to NYS with AMD's projected factory in Satatoga?

ANDREW WANTS TO BE THE NEXT NY GOV JUST LIKE POPS

Mo Money, Mo Money

I have never been an AMD fans as I was stuck on the Intel bandwagon, But I go weary of Intel and their tactics. The bully needs a playground beating and I think AMD could do it with the proper capital
