Ancient computers cause trouble in Greenwich

Upgrade, they have not heard of it
Thu Oct 19 2006, 08:31
THE COMPUTER system in the London borough of Greenwich is so old that it seems to have a mind of its own, reversing the natural order of things.

IC southlondon has reported the comments of Greenwich Unison branch secretary Onay Kasab who said that important council reports were being deleted, going missing or being mixed up with other files.

Apparently the system does not like child protection reports and is deleting them for no apparent reason.

Kasab said that one social services worker ended up writing everything down and took her notes to court rather than risk putting it onto her temperamental PC.

One Tory councillor Alex Wilson took said he realised that there was something wrong with the network when he noticed it was running Windows 95 and Netscape Navigator. We think we can see the problem here, it being 2006 and all.

Last year the council signed an eight-year contract with Big Blue which is earning £2.7 million-a-year for an IT makeover.

Clearly the first year of the project has not really resolved much in the way of an upgrade yet.

Do you think the move was justified?
