MANY SEMICONDUCTOR firms showed gains on the day, even though investors showed knee-jerk reactions after a Merrill Lynch IT sector downgrade yesterday.

For example, ATI (tick: ATYT) was up 35 cents at press time, to stand at $15.70. Intel (INTC) rose 31 cents to hit $18.49. Nvidia (NVDA) was up 29 cents to reach $18.82. And the lesser Zilla, AMD, showed a rise of 23 cents as investors re-gained some confidence.

However, OEM Dell dropped by 28 cents, to stand at $23.20 right now. That could be because LG won patent actions against Compal, FIC and Quanta - the first and the last make notebooks for the world+dog.

Google (GOOG) chuntered along by adding $5.16 to its share price. Like Rambus (RMBS) there is little rhyme and practically no reason figuring out what happens to these share prices. They are a law to themselves.

Microsoft (MSFT) fell 44 cents. µ
