Web spy student ends up suspended

Principal claims she was harassed
Thursday, 24 March 2005, 07:33
A US student was suspended after he snapped pictures of his principle illegally having a fag outside a school building and posting them on his website.

In those parts, lighting up within 25 feet of a school building is against the law, so Principal Elaine Almagno should have been in trouble.

Just in case Eliazar Velasquez's mates didn't visit the site, he distributed fliers around the school with the web address on, to make sure they had a gander.

The Principal was not amused and, according to Fox News, suspended Velasquez for harassing and slandering her and being a disruptive influence.

In this Fox article, there is no mention if there was any other history here, but the American Civil Liberties Union has become involved, saying the suspension raises freedom of speech and due process concerns.

According to the local paper here, which posted Velasquez's picture, The Union approached the school board.

The board reversed the decision saying the Principal had not set a good example. Now Almagno is in trouble for smoking and will probably have to write out a thousand times 'I must not suspend student whistleblowers when I am in the wrong'. ยต
