Blue LEDs about to glow brighter

Gallium Nitride breakthrough
Thu Sep 22 2005, 10:21
THE BOFFIN who invented the blue LED is leading a team of researchers which promises to increase the intensity of the crystals.

The Nikkei Business Daily reports that Shuji Nakamura and his team have made gallium nitride films using a specific crystal arrangement which will result in brighter lights from the babies.

Nakamura is currently based in the University of California Santa Barnera, but couldn't reveal exact details because a patent is pending.

The Japanese newspaper did say the newer type of blue crystals have nonpolar and semi-polar properties, unlike your average gallium nitride crystals. More here (subscription required). µ
