FRENCH FIRM Soitec said it plans to open a 300mm SOI fab in Singapore. Ground breaking will start next month and be built on 2.7 hectares.

The firm specialises in silicon on insulator (SOI) technology.

The firm said it will have over 4,000 square metres of cleanroom space, with the investment totalling €350 million.

Production is slated for mid-2008 and the firm reckons its final capacity will be one million wafers a year.

The firm will also build two extra 300mm lines in its Bernin Fab 2 during the second half of this year. It has bought Grenoble based TraciT Technologies and bought space in Memscap.

CEO and president Andre-Jacques Auberton-Herve said: "Our historical research alliance with the CEA Leti Research Laboratory, together with our location in the Grenoble area, remains a cornerstone of our ability to maintain our leadership". ยต
