Intel says reports of Itanic's death are false

No chip chop, chip shop frying tonight and tomorrow

CHIP COMPANY Intel has denied reports on Taiwanese wire Digitimes that its line of high end Itanium processors is for the chop.

In fact, Chipzilla described the report as "rubbish".

See Intel expected to fiddle with server lines in 2008.

Said an Intel representative: "The rumours around Itanium are rubbish. Intel has a competitive Itanium roadmap and we are launching the Montvale processors later this year. Additionally we have 3 more generations of Itanium processors under developement. These include Tukwila, Poulson and Kittson."

Earlier this week we reported that SGI clinched a deal with NASA to sell it over a thousand dual core Itaniums for a supercomputer the space agency is building. ยต

* Editorial at Digitimes said that in its original report it said only that, "Current non-x86 Itanium 2 servers are to be replaced by the new Boxboro MC platform". How this has been blown up into the end of the Itanium is anyone's guess.
