A chip foundry takes designs from "fabless" firms and knocks out chips based on those designs.
According to the Taiwan Economic News, TSMC confirmed its plans which will cost around $6.2 billion. But it didn't say when the fabs would start production. The report reckons the current 12-incher at the southern park is churning out 30,000 wafers a month, while another plant it has there will go into production later this year, and also deliver a similar amount of wafers.
Thing is, as market research firm Future Horizons pointed out recently, fabs are full up for the whole of 2006. µ
