IBM to use Cell chip for blade servers

It was always going to happen
Wednesday, 8 February 2006, 16:56
BIG BLUE announced it would use the Cell processor designed by it, Sony and Toshiba in a range of high end servers.

Applications that need good processing power and can render graphics are the target of Big Blue's desire.

The chips using the Cell processor will be used in blade servers and may have applications in military and medical settings.

The Cell BE - which stands for the Broadband Engine - was shown off at an IBM event in New York.

IBM said the blades will be suitable for other arenas including digital media, aerospace, and comms. The first systems will become available in the third quarter of this year. µ
