Sony announces Blu-ray red laser heads

Backwards compatible and easier to make
Tue May 18 2004, 15:17
SONY ANNOUNCED yesterday that it has developed a three-wavelength optical head, which is able to record and play back discs in three formats: the standards DVD and CD formats, as well as the all new Blu-ray discs.

Not only will this development be more useful to users - as backwards compatibility almost certainly is - it will also reduce the amount of parts required to produce optical heads, which are important parts of any DVD or CD players.

Sony is hoping to promote the use of its Blu-ray system, despite competition from an alternative format. Its product should be commercially available within two years. µ
