Qimonda and SMIC extend pleasantries

DRAM for me, DRAM for you
Tue Aug 21 2007, 11:59
QIMONDA AND snappily titled Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation - or SMIC - have today announced an agreement which will expand on their current DRAM production.

The agreement states that Qimonda will be transferring its 80nm DRAM trench technology to SMIC's 300mm plant based in Beijing, while SMIC will produce DRAMs for computer applications exclusively for Qimonda. Also outlined in the agreement is the option for a transfer of Qimonda's 75nm technology to SMIC in the near future.

Kin Wah Loh, CEO of Qimonda, reckons the move will help the company climb those rungs: "The extension of our cooperation further increases our production capabilities," he plainly stated in a press release.

Smick's CEO says he and his company is "excited" about expanding the Qimonda partnership into 80nm manufacturing. SMIC has one of the largest semiconductor foundries in mainland China, so it's good news for all involved and dull news for the rest of us. µ
