DELL AND AT&T are facing a PR nightmare after cashing cheques not made out to them and refusing to give back the money when they were told.
Sacramento woman Sandra Hallet bought a Dell PC and signed up with AT&T for the internet and phone service. However when Sandra was paying the June bills she stuck the wrong cheques in the wrong envelops.
Despite the fact that the cheques were not made out to them, both companies cashed them and are now refusing to give the money back.
Dell gobbled up the $235.00 cheque made out to AT&T as part payment for the PC and started to charge interest on the remainder. AT&T snaffled the $1138.33 meant for Dell leaving the Hallet family a credit of $903.33.
AT&T refused to had over the cash because it said they had deducted cash from it for a phone bill the Hallets had not yet got.
AT&T have since apologised. They have taken out money for July, which has not happened yet, but sent the Hallets $643.75 change. µ

Shouldn't the banks involved in this be asked why they accepted the checks ?
Or am I now allowed to cash a check made out to my neighbor ?
If I were this momentarily-inattentive lady, I would be sending my lawyer to the bank with the question. I'm sure the response would be quite interesting.
In other words, banks today appear to be forgetting that they are the ones with the responsibility of being exact and truthful. That is a major fault which should be heavily sanctioned.
What are they paying AT&T $235 for? 4 cell phones, a home phone and the most expensive DSL package they have?
Okay, unless Dell and AT&T are the same company, cashing checks not made out to you is fraud.

She either has a horrible lawyer or no lawyer at all.
