Red Hat and Fujitsu to boost mission-critical Linux

Enterprise customers willing to pay

OPEN SOURCE software is taking another big step upwards in the corporate structure. One of the places that Linux has built a good reputation is in mission-critical enterprise systems. Fujitsu is one of the biggest players in that game and it has announced that it will be working with Red Hat to make Linux even better.

The announcement is that the two companies have effectively formed a partnership to build tighter code, optimise Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Fujitsu hardware and market the results. This being Linux, the resulting code should pour back into the community, giving everyone more reliable systems.

The two firms are creating joint engineering teams at Red Hat offices. The results should be of great benefit to both companies. Red Hat will be gaining experience from Fujitsu, a company that has a very strong reputation in mission critical systems. That should make Red Hat Enterprise Advanced Server even more attractive to other big players in the field.

The Linux firm has been pinning a lot of its hopes on enterprise customers after watching revenue from that area grow rapidly. It makes plenty of sense for them and other Linux players, enterprises have big wallets and aren't afraid to open them.

Conversely, Fujitsu will be gaining a version of Linux that is even better suited to its customers' needs. Oracle and Veritas have already given their blessings to the deal. µ
