A pint of wine to a vintner is as a pippin to a costermonger
DESPITE THE problems some people had with ordering their 3G Iphone, this hack received his Iphone in the post this morning - though one other unnamed INQ staffer had to run down to his local Carphonewarehouse at 7.30am.
Yes, it's an undeniable beauty. Typically, even the packaging is a work of art.
The phone and package.
To setup the Iphone we popped in the SIM, hooked the device up to Itunes, and almost-instantly our phone was ready for use.
During the sync process, we also signed up to MobileMe, but at nearly £60 a year, it seems somewhat overpriced. We suspect that after our free month, the subscription will soon be cancelled.
As reported all over the World Wide Wibble, the App Store is running, and filled with a plethora of different applications - from games like Super Monkey Ball, to Facebook widgets, the store is brimming with free and low-cost software.
Payment and installation is an absolute breeze - this is how things should be done. A quick click on purchase and your password entered, and the app will appear on your main widget screen, showing a progress bar whilst it's downloading. Then it's available for use.
We've already 'researched' Super Monkey Ball and Bomberman, and the controls, graphics and implementation are all reminiscently of decent console games.
The systems appears more at home with Nintendo DS quality graphics, than that of the Sony PSP. The sound is of a sufficient quality, but not amazing.
The speed of the 3G connection seems as fast as other devices we've used for long-term browsing, and the in-built GPS is a boon - a feature that we feel should be incorporated into all mobile phones.
Their are, of course, a few well-known gripes with the device.
The lack of MMS is a real let-down, and the quality of the camera could have been increased for this 2nd revision. Neither has a flash or zoom been added.
It's a bit of a pain too, that the front and back of the device seem to be drawn infectiously to any possible grease or dirt.
Despite trying hard, we couldn't manage to keep the back of the device
smudge-free for longer than 30 seconds.
Overall though, the device is still playing on its own within a crowded market - its heads and tails above the other miserable excuses for touch-screen phones. µ
I was one of the fortunate that managed to pre-order, upgrade and should have had the phone delivered to my door via O2 today... sadly I missed the delivery but the guy is nice enough to come round with it tomorrow morning (still not sure if I like the idea of self-employed DHL dudes)

Anways, a wee thought from up here north. I waited the whole phone game (hated the things) until O2 launched the XDA... then later bought an XDAII (I never upgraded after that since all the touch phones sucked, even the original iphone) -- neither of those HTC devices have ever supported MMS on pocketpc natively ...

I ended up upgrading the firmware to an unofficial winmobile 5 OS and losing the capability completely (meh, who cares)

Point is, MMS is an addon for those devices and in the last case was actually a 3rd party application. Now I work for Vodafone, I know that all sims support MMS just by adding on the service.. What is to say the iPhone is not just the same thing? And what have apple done? opened an App store.

I don't really care for MMS, I'm more annoyed about lack of copy/paste and running multiple applications at once... OTOH, I know how much my HTC devices hated having more than 3 - 4 apps open, it remains to be seen how this push technology is implemented in the app store.
Congrats to you guys on managing to get the box open and getting a change to fiddle with it before Nick found out and took the steel mallet to it.
Google it or see one of many reviews here http://www.mobilegazette.com/htc-touch-diamond-08x05x06.htm

Is the new iphone better than this?

What about the soon to be released HTC Touch Pro http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/04/the-htc-touch-pro/

Which is better? I demand that you do a test! ;-)
You forget. We're UK based.
Nothing like picking up an IPhone and At&T service to show your support for George W and telecom immunity!

Nice! Must feel good.

Seriously, shame on you guys.

Even more shame considering Bush quietly signed into law the new FISA bill just yesterday, telecom Immunity included of course.

Enjoy your phone though. You guys talk a great game, but you're just mindless consumer sheep like everyone else.

Baaaaaaah.

Watching the news yesterday I came across a CNN review, and the guys didn't mince their words...the iPhone - very pretty, but why bother it's next to worthless (paraphrased).

So it's got 3g, so does everyone else, it can't MMS, mine does, it can't take moving pictures, oh my we've been doing this for years, it can't open business (word, excel, etc)documents, yes we need them...can't run more than one application at a time...enough.

When will people grow up, open their eyes and see the worms in this apple! It is just rotten to the core...

regards
I never thought I would see the day that Apple got free hype from the Inquirer.

Who are you and what have you done with teh regular Inquirer staff ?

I've swapped my HTC Touch Dual for the Iphone.

The touch interface used by anything running Windows Mobile simply doesn't compare. It's a half-baked 'solution' and is nowhere near the Iphone in terms of implementation.

Stay clear.
And?

I wouldn't bother responding to your lame comment, but I find the irony rich. You fools are giving up civil liberties faster than we are.

And for what? A phone.

A phone....

I've come to respect this publication, but Dean, you leave great doubt with me this week.

You could have done better, but I think you know this, otherwise you would have come up with something a little better than "not our problem."

Why bother spending 1000 bucks on a phone?
Why can't i install a different codec, or why can't the iphone have a disk function??? Two very simple things asked. "it's just a phone not a laptop" is the response from the Apple Store reps. However, you can buy a laptop for the same price. Seems like a hell of a lot of money to look at youtube and pictures of your dog while chatting with your mates. And that 199 is total bullshit!!!
