EZ ORG offers password relief

Review: Secure Web management system

IF YOU'RE ANYTHING like me then I feel sorry for you, but you will share some of the problems that I do, even if you're nothing like me.

For example, how many passwords, serial numbers, credit card numbers, PIN numbers, and other confidential data do you have? Probably dozens and dozens.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to keep all of this information in one place, and wherever you are in the world, to be able to access that number from the World Wild Web?

That's where this British piece of software comes in. Ez-Org lets you enter all your personal data, from your credit card numbers to your tax reference number to your driving licence details in one toughly encrypted spot on the Web.

The software allows you to enter as much data as you like, and also keeps track of the different PCs, notebooks and other machines you have, as well as details of software on machines, along with their licence numbers and other relevant material.

The fact all the data is in one place means that even if your machine crashes and burns and the heatsink flying off causes a disastrous meltdown on your PC, you'll be able to log in anywhere else and retrieve all the information.

The software was developed by Stuart Brown and we asked him about security. He said that the data is stored in a number of SQL databases in a Web farm of servers for fault tolerance. Backups are performed three times daily and copied off site, while the database backups are also encrypted and can onlu be restored to a known configuration in a known userid. The data itself is encrypted and so can't be read in native form.

The site is based on HTTPS, 40 or 80-bit SSL, depending on the browser you use. The software is simple to use and easy to navigate.

I think this is a great idea. Apart from helping you organise stack of numbers which you can never remember when you need them and have to dig through piles of paperwork to find, its accessible from any computer that has access to the Web, anywhere.

Hey, I liked it so much I actually paid for the software - that's got to be a first for an IT hack!

There's an introductory offer for the software of £5 if you register before the 31st of November - after that it costs £10. At the end of your year's subscription, you'll be prompted to pay another ten quid. Site licences for businesses and organisations are negotiable, says Brown.

There's a tour of the features of EZ-ORG here, while the front page for the software is here. µ
