D-link updates gaming router

Draft 802.11n
Tuesday, 30 October 2007, 12:38

ROUTER OUTFIT D-Link has begun shipping the next generation of its successful router for gamers, the Draft 802.11n Xtreme N Gaming Router.

The firm says the box is designed for gamers, by gamers, and works with both PCs and consoles such as Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation.

D-Link claims the router enables users to setup a high-performance gaming network that offers the fastest wired and wireless speeds available from a single broadband device.

It has a game-centric user interface for the configuration of multiple ports or port ranges in the firewall by selecting the game title from a menu. The Gaming Router can be accessed quickly to change settings and adjust performance for individual applications, the firm says.

A packet processing engine is integrated directly in the router, giving online games priority for bandwidth over all other Internet applications, e-mail and FTP transfers. These aim to boost gaming to maximum speeds to provide the ultimate "no lag" gaming experience.

The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) is $239.99.

802.11n is still draft?

You would think by now the 802.11n would be ratified...they had 802.11n 'draft' products on the market almost 2 years ago! Wasn't 802.11n supposed to be fast enough to replace good old ethernet? By the time they get it out the door we'll have 10-gig ethernet!!! Oh well, back to the drawing boards.

been out a while

Old news man! I bought one of these to replace my aging DGL-4100 about 2 months ago. I don't have any computers with wireless-N yet but hey, I gotta plan for the future, right? I paid somewhere around $120 at Fry's, certainly not the "MSRP of $240". Is that a typo?

The only thing I wish it did a little better was the MAC address filtering. I don't understand why I should need to manually input *wired* MAC addresses to allow access on a home networking device if I turn on MAC address filtering. A commercial router for business, sure. But not this product.
