THOSE NICE FOLKS who gave us the ubiquitous Photoshop, Adobe, have dipped another toe into the online video arena with Adobe Media Player.
The company, which acquired Flash owners Macromedia in a $3.4 billion takeover in 2005, has released the software into a market brimming with rivals but hopes to bring something new to the party.
The free-to-download player allows user to queue up and download Internet TV content, track and download new episodes automatically, and manage and catalogue videos for viewing at any time. Well, that's what the blurb says. The reality is that some content (we're guessing the up-to-date and popular stuff) is only available to view online.
Media partners at time of launch include CBS, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon. As a sample of the quality of broadcasts which will be availbale, CBS will be providing episodes of CSI (in Miami and NY flavours), and Big Brother. They will also be opening the archives to broadcast older titles like Star Trek and The Twilight Zone.
Our first look revealed a very Vista-centric appearance and less than blinding performance on a 10Mbps connection. The search engine also seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis as a search for "Comedy Central" came back with no results.
Content is liberally splattered with shampoo ads and health supplements as you would expect.

What's
new Adoobedoo?
My only complaint is that Adobe acts like a virus.

I did not have Adobe Air installed and when I installed AMP so Air had to be installed as well.

After playing with AMP, and not being able to get any of the CSI stuff to play, I uninstalled AMP. There was no provision to uninstall Air.

I went to the Adobe website and looked through their LiveDocs and they direct you to run the uninstaller located in my /Applications folder. As you can imagine, it is not there.

I download the Air installer hoping to install AIR again along with the uninstaller, but it says my version is up to date and quits.

Adobe does not provide a link to download the uninstaller.

So what makes Adobe different from any other virus that I might pick-up. It it is hidden on my system, I can't uninstall it, and I don't know what it is doing in the back ground. Thankfully I have Little Snitch and have denied Air access to the Internet.

I am through with Adobe and I hope it does not make it to my iPhone or my iPod Touch.
Adobe has responded to me and told me that their LiveDocs information was wrong, and since I have posted this comment on the first fifty news items I could find on Google, I think I should follow up with the information they sent me:

"Sorry for the trouble. Please note that Adobe Media Player is an
application built on AIR, so AIR is required to install and use AMP.

The uninstaller is actually located in the /Application/Utilities
folder."
I care not where the uninstaller is. I have abandoned Adobe since ages ago. Nothing they make is of any interest to me anymore, and for PDF viewing and whatnot, there are free alternatives that beat Adobe to a pulp.
This undoubtedly DRM-infested, low-quality media thing has nothing to interest me enough to risk infecting my PC with Adobe stuff again - I have Star Trek on DVD anyway, the complete 3 box collection.
And all the films.
