IPF/x86 interchangable systems tip up

Easy migration paths from SGI
Fri Mar 02 2007, 14:04
INTERESTING THINGS happen when companies start bragging about their roadmaps, not directly, but in the grand scheme of things.

In this case, SGI was chatting about its long term roadies, and some interesting Intel bits popped up.

Remember Beckton? If not, look here and here. The interesting bit from SGI? In mid-2009, it has Tukwila and Beckton interchangable on the roadmaps.

Other than being a little over two years after Intel wanted it to happen, the grand dream of giving people an easy path off IPF is a reality, you can buy the big boxes and move off for the cost of a CPU. Seriously though, the interoperability here is going to be a key, and will be very good for SGI, they can sell the same infrastructure to multiple markets.

Nothing earth shattering, just confirmation of a timetable and a promise. Place your orders now for a 512S gaming rig, it may be needed to fully run Supreme Commander. µ
