Sunbeamtech mops up

Hardware Roundabout in Spanish, no less
Tuesday, 24 June 2008, 08:52

CHILE HARDWARE IS DOING a smallish roundup of CPU coolers (7 in all) with an unlikely winner blowing away the competition. An overclocked E6850 was used as the test-base, with some stock and overclocking taking place to measure the coolers under real stress. Sunbeamtech has a winner here, as their Core-Contact Freezer won at every turn. Noisy, but effective. Go here or here for Googlenglish.

Dave at Hot Hardware has is reviewing Intel’s latest Extreme Edition CPU in the mobile segment: the X9000. This is basically as high as you’ll go on a mobile CPU, and the clever little performer has some advanced power states that’ll save battery life, although we really can’t understand the product segmentation (or what makes this an Extreme Edition CPU, as the specs aren’t that different from its little bros. Still, it makes working on a laptop a joy… Catch it here.

Sanjin, of Fud Squad note, published his review of the HD4850 a few days back (sorry guys, lots of love… lots of love…). You can see how much work has gone into AA and Anisotropic Filtering, as the 4850 takes the hammer to the 9800GTX . Heavily recommended, if you don’t mind third-degree burns… Read Sanjin’s re-view.

Hardware Mag in Germany has a nice comparison of the 4-series Intel chipset family. It’s not new but they’ve compiled everything into some nice tables that make it easier for you to pick your prize. It really doesn’t need a translation, but you can find the original here while magical Googlenglish is conjured here.

OCC is making a point that we’ve made before, one that gets more valid by the day: buy 2x2GB of RAM instead of 2x1GB. Today’s example is A-Data’s Plus Series DDR2-800, a steal at $85.99. This particular DDR2 is inexpensive and comes with tight (4-4-4-12) timings, overclocks wildly (1066@5-5-5-12) and draws your usual 1.9 thru 2.1 volts o’power. Looks interesting enough, especially if you’re on a budget. Go here.

UMPCPortal is gaining a bit of momentum these days, as their subject of choice is becoming more popular by the day. Today they posted their Asus R2E review, a pre-Atom 7-inch UMPC. There’s a full Vista installed, as well as a gigabyte of RAM and 80GB of HD. None of the technologies are ground-breaking, but Thorsten thinks it’s got the right stuff. Your only problem, as he puts it, is whether to wait for the Atom-powered, brand new R70, or go for this one which will be available at a much better price point in no time. Look at the tiny PC, here.

Silenx is a brand we must confess is rather unknown to us. Nonetheless it seems Red and Blackness knows them and is more than willing to test the Ixtrema ICX-HA2 CPU cooler with dual fan action. The Ixtrema seems to be an easy installer and the performance beats its two competitors in the article – one of which is the Uber-good Noctua NH-U12P. Read R&B here.

InsideHW has gotten hold of some figures on the Montevina platform. The (short) article also has some specs on the platform, including the new T9400 CPU running on a 1066MHz FSB. The new GMA X4500 looks like it’s an underachiever here, although battery life doesn’t seem at all bad. You can look at the Centrino 2 logo, here. µ
