Via launches Opteron workstation chipset

Dual processor capability
Tuesday, 22 April 2003, 18:35
TODAY BEING OPTERON day means that everyone is trying to get in on the act. Fair enough, it's all good for the industry. Next on the list is Via, a company that definitely had an invitation to the launch of the Opteron because it was launching a chipset to go with it. The K8T400M has been expected for a little while.

The Northbridge uses a 1.06GB/s link to a VT8237. That's the same Southbridge as the KT400A Athlon chipset uses. That gives the chipset the same 6 channel audio, 10/100 Ethernet, integrated modem, SATA and USB 2 that the KT400A has.

The more interesting part of the chipset is that it supports two Opterons as opposed to the Nvidia Nforce 3 which can only support a single chip. That should make it a very interesting choice for workstations motherboards. µ
