Scottish canals get connected

Wi-Fi in the canals
Thursday, 18 September 2008, 20:55

IT SEEMS THE SCOTS are desperate for connectivity - or at least the service providers seem to think so – as BT has teamed up with British Waterways Scotland, to bring Wi-Fi access to 13 canal-side locations across the country.

This follows the recent deal between O2 and the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport to bring mobile phone and 3G services to several of the underground stations in Glasgow.

The new hotspots are distributed along the Caledonian, Crinan, Union and Forth & Clyde canals, and are designed to bring internet service to areas which have previously have been known to experience patchy reception.

"These new services will greatly benefit everyone who visits, lives or works close to the canal," said Richard Millar from British Waterways Scotland.

"The introduction of high speed internet access across Scotland's canals further demonstrates our commitment to making Scottish canals accessible to all and is part of an ongoing strategy to open up the canals to more users."

Those who want to use the new Wi-Fi hotspots will be subject to the usual BT Openzone tariffs and subscription rates. µ
