Radvision fuels 3G video calls

Launches webcam client
Tuesday, 1 August 2006, 22:58
GETTING TWO people to make a video call is normally a nightmare because of incompatibilities. But if one end of the connexion can use a broadband connected PC with a webcam and the other a 3G phone, then videotelephony might just catch on.

Israeli comms specialist, Radvision, has just solved this problem with its free PC-to-Mobile software client. This enables a 3G phone to accept (and pay for) an incoming call from a video enabled PC.

So, for example, grandparents in the UK could see their off-spring sitting in front of a webcam in Hong Kong. They don't need anything more complicated than a regular 3G handset connected to any one of the mobile phone networks.

The technology also looks set to revolutionise the adult industry. Sex workers can give out their 3G phone number and become accessible live to any customer connected to the Internet.

The attraction to Radvision's solution from a mobile network operator's perspective is that it makes uses of standard 3G video calls instead of carrying IP video over an expensive data link. µ
