SuSE opens up on names

Most of us love OpenSuse

SUSE IS renaming its Linux distro for consumers as OpenSuse to avoid confusion with the imminent, commercially supported Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop and Suse Linux Enterprise Server.

In a mailing list announcement, the firm said that the Suse Linux 10.2 code posted today "will be the last community/consumer distribution called Suse Linux … With current naming we experienced confusion internally and externally between the project openSuse and the distribution created there."

Massaging the beards of its loyalists, the post added: "We're very sorry that suggestions like SuSE Linux Voyager, Gecko Linux or Novora didn't make it ;-)."

However, that would not appear to be the end of the confusion. Over at Slashdot, for it is they, there is plentiful wibble about naming conventions. At least Novell can point to Microsoft as a successful company that has never stopped rebranding products. µ
