Yahoo Mash invites casual vandalism

Desperation on the cusp of madness
Tue Sep 18 2007, 11:52

A SURE SIGN that online social networking is spinning into inanity is Yahoo's beta launch of "Mash" - a new service that allows, even encourages, casual vandalism by one's peers.

So far available by invitation only, Mash lets users mess with each others' profile pages. According to a Yahoo bog, it also lets users dragoon their friends onto the site by creating "starter" profile pages without their knowledge and inviting them to update those.

The site does allow users to reject profile changes, and to bar other users from making changes.

From here, the potential for all kinds of abuse looks nearly unlimited. Really, whatever could Yahoo have been thinking? µ
