AMD praises Intel performance

And fleshes out how it will react
Friday, 20 April 2007, 10:43
WEB SITE AMD Zone listened to AMD's first quarter conference call and most interesting really it is too.

The full summary is here.

There's details of the ramp to 65 nanometres, the move to 45 nanometres "in the first half" of 2008, and much more.

Intel, according to Hector Ruiz, has "done a good job" in closing the gap with AMD, but he said it's taken Chipzilla four years to do that.

There is another way of looking at this. Just after then CEO Craig Barrett announced it would, after all, support 64-32 technology, we visited AMD - the guys asked us what we thought.

We said that AMD had a clear lead over Intel of between 18-24 months and that there was no doubt the chip giant would react as quickly as it could. That meant AMD had to do an awful lot to ensure it kept the lead over Intel because Chipzilla is best when its back is against the wall. µ
