The proper basis for a marriage is mutual misunderstanding - Oscar Wilde
LATE FALL IN Taipei is when the tree frogs sing, and that means the moles come out of their holes to bark back. This time their song is about Nvidia and massive layoffs.
Even a casual observer can tell you that the green team is hurting for cash, mole barking or no. The specific barking this time says that they are going to shed another 1000 jobs in the near future. Given that the company only has about 5000 people left, even a mole can tell you that it means about a 20 per cent haircut.
Moles are curious creatures, loyal to the end, but they have a lousy sense of time. Because of this, there was no way to tell when this will happen.
Given that the company has a quarter that ends in a few days, and a CC in a little over two weeks, those with better senses of time than a mole would guess it will come in that time frame. ยต
Update
Nvidia denies this. We stand by our story and sources
The problem with you is you do not have accountability. You are like politicians in the sense that no matter what you say, you keep your job. And that is a shame because your accuracy is as good as a bad dart thrower. If you knew a tiny bit about Nvidia you would no they have 1.6 Billion in cash and no debt and a very high free cash flow. With all the Apple computer business they have just won and more to come from other oem's (of course you do not read other news than yours) there is no possibility that your information could be correct. And by the way I only come to your site because you are listed on the web and I always am shocked that ignorant people still can say whatever they want in this world.
Hurting for cash.....hmmm 1.6 BILLION in cash and no debt, free cash-flow even last q(which was "bad") was nearly 100 million, you sure you aren't talking about AMD?Just like you siad they are getting out of the chip-set biz....hmmm maybe Apple didn't realize this before they committed to Nividia chips OVER Intel...get a life Dude.
Hurting for cash? They have USD 1.6 billion in cash and short term investments. Add to that thay nVidia has no debt (even Intel has debt).

Letting every fifth person go is as likely as the other "news" you've been serving over the last few months, Charlie. Get a better source or get one less biased. You and your source are just egging eachother on and you're just making yourself look increasingly silly.
Is it not written in nVidias terms of employment that nVidia employees must sell their souls prior to commencing work at nVidia? Are they then allowed to collect them again as they leave the building? That doesnt sound like the nVidia I know!

I dont mean to be cruel but this news can be seen as the fruiting of long held karma. In the past this company's over zealous cost cutting has been evident to me as a chipset user as gun barrel support ie very narrow focus on the majority demographic re OS, hardware and software without sympathy for the extra upgrade costs and difficulties this incurs for their customers. This was how I started to go off nVidia.

This news is IMHO due to the same production cost cutting money grabbing mentality which went on to undermine the quality of their chips and cost them their profits. Ditto their offensive SLI strategy. nVidia seems bent on self destruction by short-termism. When will they learn ?

So what else is new? C'mon guys, the graphics market is cyclical and has always been! It's ATI's turn to shine as the market figures show. Nvidia's downturn is as natural as a late brunch on Sunday - only this time mother nature has included a few curve balls (the poor state of the world economy, bad blood with Dell and HP, a late Nehalem chipset and waning trust from Asian hardware vendors) that will make it a little tougher for NV to bounce back... but it will happen, it always does!
I was also told by a friend at Nvidia that 16% of the work force will be cut by next quarter and this time the cuts will be in the US (unlike the overseas cut from last time).

Anyway, the fact that it was UPDATED here saying that Nvidia denied this is weird....anyone, (world + dog), who has connection with Nv can confirm this cut...I checked with my subcon friends as well and they knew about this since last week.

So it would be weird that Nvidia would deny this.
Just had a brief chat with the receptionist at Nvidia, she confirmed to me the imminent layoff in the US site before the next quarter.

Funny, how the "update" here made it seem like this news is "top secret" from Nvidia.
