Super thin screen flies in the face of technology

Samsung puts the wind up the competition
Wednesday, 29 October 2008, 15:07

SAMSUNG SDI exhibited the thinnest ever OLED panel at FPD International 2008.

The 0.05mm thick, four-inch OLED panel, which Samsung has inventively named, “flapping display” was hung in the air waving around under the influence of a fan (the electric whirly type... not a crazy Samsung tech groupie).

Flap this panel does, but only in the same way a piece of paper would if you held it out the window – it is rather more a circumstantial quality than a useful function of the panel.

Samsung says it could have made the panel even thinner, but it was difficult to further reduce the thicknesses of the flexible substrates and circuit components around it.

The resolution of the display is 480×272, contrast ratio is 100,000:1, luminance is 200cd/m2 and the color reproduction range is 100 per cent of the NTSC standard.

No practical future uses for the new panel have been suggested but, as the substrate is so delicate that it will have to be sandwiched between two layers of glass – no you won't be able to roll it up and put it in your pocket – it looks like Samsung is in it for the bragging rights only. µ

Except...

"Samsung says it could have made the panel even thinner, but it was difficult to further reduce the thicknesses of the flexible substrates and circuit components around it."

It could have made the panel even thinner except for the fact that it couldn't.

Green faces all round...

Samsung is the Devil

100% of the NTSC standard? Wot is that, some defunct standard that has no meaning any more?
Yeah -- that's what I thought.

marketing

Technology is great but marketing isn't.
100,00:1 contrast? OLED it may be but samsungs continual use of "dynamic" contrast does not a faithful believer make.

The 2006 le32m51b 32" lcd has a claimed 3000:1 and an ACTUAL 594:1
and since then 50,000:1 has been claimed with the actual amount is ten times less and the same as every other tier 1 panel manufaturer.

Excellent!!!

480x272 is the perfect resolution to
play Crysis on my 7800GS.

@ Richard

Check out the link. There is a pic of it fluttering in the wind there.

Good point well made:

"It could have made the panel even thinner except for the fact that it couldn't."

That said, it is quite an achievement of Samsung. Inq: Any chance of an image? Merely reading about it doesn't really do it justice.

Waving in the Wind

A great use would be for flags at international sporting competitions. No need to incessantly hoist and then lower all those flags!

Excellent, this has so many uses, can you think of any?

See through screens with data displayed on them:
Car windscreen with built sat nav, speed, gear, like on new BMWs.
Sunglasses/glasses with TV on them.
Windows with TV on them.
Signs on glass that can be updated, like adverts etc.

There are loads, this is a cool tech.
