Newisys, AMD, and Dell

Letter: Why they call it the Hammer!

Dear INQwell

A source has pointed me to a company working very closely with AMD called Newisys. From what I'm told Newisys is developing 4-16 way Opteron systems including interconnect chipsets for what appears to be 'extremely large-scaleout type SMP boxes'.

You can find their job posting here and here. These and other listings lean towards Linux and server management technologies I'm told.

There are also 'Extremely strong ties to both Dell and IBM.'

Now I'm wondering where that leaves HP? Will Dell bang AMD processors into their workstation, desktop and mobile kits?? Or will Dell remain for some time yet, Intel's ‘Go'.

But if when Hammer becomes the 64bit Cash Cow, will Dell be able to afford not to introduce AMD chips? Michael is no ones fool, but I really don't see how anyone can hide 64bit in the current 32bit world. It's not like when the Athlon came out and the OEMs just swept it under the rug by pairing it with sub-par configurations.

This, of course, is why AMD calls it the Hammer as it will be very hard for Intel or Dell to market against 64bit. Hammer will redefine the market regardless if Yamhill is brought to fruition or not as it will usher in 64bit technology into every segment. This is going to be this year's holiday ‘Got to have it'. And you can bet M$ will be putting up some marketing cash in order to sell Windows Xp-64, especially since Windows Xp failed to spur computer sales here in the states last year as planned. This will add greatly to the 64bit mad dash as more and more people will have 64bit flashed in their face. How long will OEMs be able to sell 32bit kits?? Not long I bet. This could be what brings about the upturn in the IT field, I hope.

Anyone know what MicronPC might be doing with Hammer?? As this seems to me the strongest bet from a US OEM. Or perhaps you're working for an upstart and care to share some intel [cough]. Of course there is Appro in the server market, and Alienware in the high-end Gaming/Enthusiast market. Anyone care to comment?

I'm also very interested on hearing from anyone else that may have e-mails verifying OEMs, and partners; or possibly documentation showing current Newisys configurations.

Thanks to those who provided this information!!
