Vista proves uncrashable

The two-fingered fiddle
Wednesday, 18 July 2007, 13:08
DON'T TELL CHARLIE but we've been running Vista here for a while now. There's some stuff to report and we'll let you have our thoughts on the software at some point.

Meanwhile, there have been some stories about how you can crash Vista. Here's one which says that holding down the Windows key and E at the same time opens a Windows Explorer window.

If you hold the keys down, new Windows continue appearing. The site says that holding the keys down for 20 seconds or so crashes the OS.

It's a bit like if you see a sign saying, 'Do not push this button'. You can't help but wonder.

Anyhow, we held down the said keys for a good twenty seconds. Windows were opening up like crazy. Even after we removed our fingers from the keys, the machine was going apeshit bananas and did so for ages. In fact, expecting a crash and unable to do anything meaningful with the system while it was in bananas mode, we nipped off for a fag.

But upon our return the system had stabilised. Some 82 Explorer Windows were open, but the system was still ticking away merrily. We were quite impressed.

We're running a 32-bit version of Vista Ultimate on a very nice dual-core AMD Athlon 64 5000+ in a micro-ATX, MSI K9AGM2 motherboard based on the 690G chipset with HDMI support. Graphics are driven by a Radeon X1950 Pro and the system has 2Gb of Kingston Memory (Value Ram KVR667D2N5K2/2G 2048Mb 667MHz DDR2 Dimm).

Vista clearly likes AMD. ยต
