Nvidia gets leaky with GT
NVIDIA'S CHOSEN PRESS patsies are heading out to Satan Clara tomorrow, preparing for two days of presentations, drinking and general brainwashing. Many of them have already had their hands on 8800 GT cards for days or even weeks now - but, being good little boys, they are all playing by the green team's rules and holding off on the news and the reviews until next Monday.
But those kind of tactics just don't work with those crazy Far Eastern types, the ones who don't need Nvidia's 'access' to get face time with production boards and don't really need to use much English to convey benchmark results. It's no surprise, then, that we've seen one of the first (of many, to be sure) early leaks of comprehensive 8800 GT numbers.

The GT manages to beat out its other mid-high competitors - the GTS and Radeon 2900 XT - whilst coming just shy of the more-expensive GTX. In all, then, it does look like the card is going to be a winner come Chrimbo.
However, we haven't had a chance to see it pitted against ATI's latest, as the crazy Canucks appear to be keeping their cards tighter to their chest (and test benches). However, it is only likely to be a matter of time,we suspect, before those numbers come rolling in. ยต

Frankly, this all seems a little like BS. The 8800 GT is supposed to be below the GTS, the bottom rung of the 8800 series. The GTS is receiving a refresh, off of the same core as the GT, so therefore it should perform better than the GT after this is done. However, there is very little breathing room between the GT and the GTX according to the benchmarks as it is, so a refresh should put the GTS above the GTX! There does exist the possibility that the refreshed GTS will be faster than the current GTX, but if this is the case, we should see a new GTX coming out based off of the new core.
So either these benchmarks are fake, the 8800GT is terribly named, or both! Too me, it would make a lot more sense to call this the 8900 series, if all of this is true. It just seems silly and confusing to do otherwise.

considering this is a revised core that of course SHOULD be more effeicient than the old g80

I wonder why some people are surprised, 1 year later gpu's always get a 30-70% boost in one way or another.
I'm not surprised that it's faster than the older G80 core, I just don't know why they're calling it an 8800. 

Wouldn't it make more sense to call it the Geforce 8900? It's what they did the the Geforce 7900 series upon a refresh, is it not? I also don't understand why they're refreshing the 8800GTS and not making it an 8900GTS or something. 

It's going to be fun if I decide to do SLI and face issues making sure the 8800GTS I'm looking at has the right core.
It seems that some people don't know which is which between the new GT and the new GTS which is no big surprise considering that nVidia is less than forthcoming about the issue. 

Reasonably speaking one can expect that the new 8800 GT will approach the current GTS 320 in many aspects and even outperform it in artificial benchmarks, but since the amount of stream processors is less relevant than bandwidth in most games currently on the market the GT's handicap in this regard may be more apparent than what thecurrent hype would lead one to believe.

I just know nvidia already has technology thats better than the 8800ULTRA but i just know theyre just holding that off till ATI releases its counter for the presently unbeatable Ultra! I just feel it! when ati finally comes up with something against the ultra theyre gonna cut it off quick readily prepared! that would really monopolize business for them and prices will SOAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
