Intel's Prescott desktop and notebook power consumption revealed

Mobile processors better than 103W
Wednesday, 27 August 2003, 12:09
DOCUMENTS SEEN by the INQUIRER show that Intel will launch its Prescott desktop processor at two ratings, one for the performance platform and one for mainstream processors.

It's still struggling to reduce its forthcoming "Prescott" performance microprocessor power consumption from the heady heights of 103 watts to 94 watts.

And it expects to further reduce it in the future.

But the thing is still gonna run pretty hot.

Intel, in the documents we saw, said it is still on track to release Prescott in the fourth quarter of this year. But will it be on 90 nanometers? That's more unlikely, we believe.

Meanwhile, the mobile Prescotts, which are due to launch in Q1 of next year, have different ratings again. There will be two types, one at 74W and the other at 94W. Heatsinks for the mobile Prescotts are rated at 0.45C/W, while the temperature of the 94W baby is 76 degrees Celsius. The following table, scribbled from our notes, is for the desktop processors. ยต
