CHIP MAKER Intel is to reduce the size of its South Korean operations.

South Korean media reported that Intel was to shut down its R&D centre in South Korea during the first half of next year and open a large scale research centre in China instead.

Yonhap News quoted Intel Korea rep Joo Yang-ye as saying that the move is part of Chipzilla's restructuring efforts.

Intel Korea has over 150 employees, and the R&D centre has 30 researchers.

The R&D centre was launched with much fanfare in 2004. It was the first foreign research facility attracted by the Ministry of Information and Communication efforts to turn the nation into an R&D hub in the Asian region.
