Intel changes likely to force WinXP 64 delay

It's the drivers, stoopid

IT'S ALL VERY well for Dr Craig Barrett to have a spanking new set of roadmaps ready for the first quarter.

But what does that do to the launch date of Windows XP 64, ready-to-run for AMD64 and Intel's iAMD64?

It does a lot, according to sources close to the heat. Those sources tell us that the spanking new architecture with the spanking new onboard memory controller is likely to be announced in the first quarter of next year.

And that spanking new memory controller probably won't be available until the third quarter of next year.

So will we see Windows XP 64 delayed until a similar date too? On this question Microsoft is characteristically silent as only a whispering Vole can be.

And guess what? You ask AMD or Intel about this and they say you have to ask the Vole.

Maybe Microsoft will have some guts and just go ahead with the first half launch anyway. At this rate, Longhorn will be here before Windows XP 64.

It's the drivers, stoopid. Holy Ekron! ยต
