Microsoft e-reader cracked open

Crypto comes a cropper

REPORTS SAID that the encryption on Microsoft's Reader "e-book" software program has been blown wide apart by a US hacker.

As we and as Mr Dmitry Sklyarov knows, Adobe encryption on its PDF format is not a big deal to crack.

But a story in Technology Review claims that a hacker has managed to bust through Microsoft's highest level of encryption for e-books, the two persona limit.

This limit prevents a book bought being viewed on more than two machines - a limit which is set by publishers of electronic books.

Technology Reviews said the programmer who cracked the encryption demonstrated it to the magazine, but Microsoft has nothing to say on the topic.µ
