Intel to build own electricity plant in Israel

Power hungry
Tue May 27 2008, 11:13

INTEL ISRAEL HAS DECIDED it wants more power and has entered talks with private energy suppliers to possibly build a 100-150 megawatt plant inside the perimeters of its Kiryat Gat fab.

According to Israeli news source, Globes, the plant, which would provide all the energy the fab could possibly need, would cost something in the region of $150 million, and any surplus energy produced would be sold back to the national Israeli power companies.

Intel is certainly not the first company in Israel to have come up with the idea of powering its own plant. Several industrial giants, from chemical companies, to paper mills to oil refineries have been 'doing it for themselves' lately, as private power plants become all the rage.

Intel's Kiryat Gat fab is conveniently quite close to a local natural gas pipeline in the area. Having put in a purportedly reasonable bid for Intel's energy plant tender, an Israeli firm called Edeltek is thought to be the frontrunner. µ

2 products

This effectively gives them a completely new product, 100% independent of the chip and gadget industry. Of the paper mills that I know of in the US, the only ones still operating are the ones that produce their own power. Even when the paper plant makes no profit (or a loss) the mill still makes a net profit because selling power is big business.

The cost/MW is pretty much on par for a natural gas plant.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
