Jailed Chinese hack to sue Yahoo

Breach of trust
Friday, 22 September 2006, 16:33
A CHINESE hack who was sent down for ten years, is suing the internet giant Yahoo for stealing his personal emails and handing them over as evidence over to the Chinese authorities.

According to IDC, the case, on behalf of Shi Tao, will be heard before an American court. Tao was sentenced to ten years jail for copying a Beijing order for officials to be on guard for unrest and dissident activity ahead of the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

The plaintiffs argue that Yahoo Hong Kong had no right to comply with a request from China for Tao's personal data.

Yahoo in the US said it has nothing to do with them as any information would have come from Yahoo's operations in China.
