Yahoo slashes staff numbers

All those people who would be 'protected' by not going to Microsoft
Friday, 3 October 2008, 09:24

YAHOO RECENTLY claimed to be defending its staff by not allowing a lucrative take over bid by Microsoft, but it's just given shedloads of them their P45s (pink slips to our colonial brethren).

According to Silicon Alley Insider the figure will be about one in five employees which is about half a decimation. [A decimation is what they used to do to Roman legionaries when they had misbehaved. It involved killing one in ten soldiers chosen by lot. Ed]

The lay offs have been prompted by a grim financial forecast and the fact that the share price closed at $15.58.

The company is now at its lowest valuation August 2003. At this rate Yahoo shares will only be worth what you can get from a recycled paper merchant. The current value is getting on for half what Microsoft offered to pay for the outfit, but the Yahoo board insisted was far too low.

One of the reason that the board gave for avoiding the Microsoft deal was that it was taking care of its staff who might not like to work for Vole.

Now it seems that they will not be working for anyone, thanks to the board's obsession with not selling. ยต

Two decimations, not half

One-in-five is TWO decimations, not half a decimation. It's double the number of people who would go with a decimation.

Half a Decimation?

I think you mean twice a decimation, since one in five is twice as many people as one in ten.

decimation

Wouldn't 1 in 5 be 2 times a decimation?

Twice a decimation, not half.

One in five employees is the same as two in ten employees. That's the same as two decimations conducted at the same time, not half a decimation, as claimed in the article.

double decimation

Wouldn't 1-in-5 be twice a decimation rather than half of one?

Do math much?

One in five as opposed to one in ten would be twice a decimation, not half.

actually

It is twice a decimation.

1/5 = 2/10 which is twice 1/10.

slight pedantic comment

Half a decimation would be one in twenty.
1 in 5 would be twice a decimation.

Uh...

Maybe someone should mention that a decimation is 1/10 and half would be 1/20...

I'm pretty sure no one's mentioned this yet...

1/20...

1 in 5, 1 in 10...

As long as one of the pink slipped is named "JERRY YANG" , there will be a modicum of fairness in the firings.
