PC processor sales up in September

But couch potato index shows no electronics binge
Mon Nov 01 2004, 09:00
ANALYSIS OF chip sales during September last showed PC processor sales improved, apart from in North America.

According to Handelsbanken, shipments of both AMD and Intel processors continued to rise in September after good August sales. It points to sales of notebooks and server processors rising, with Europe a particularly strong region.

Nevertheless, according to the financial analyst firm, sales of memory chips slipped again in September. SRAM sales too, were weak.

Graphics chip sales also are still showing strong growth, but slowed down slightly in September.

Handelsbanken has two indices called the "couch potato" and "winer and diner" metrics. According to this, the September "couch potato" index rose slightly, but continues to slump in the doldrums because Americans are refusing to indulge in binging in TV and electronics.

In an analysis of sales prices, Handelsbanken notes that Samsung's shares slumped in September, affected by the lack of demand for TFT LCDs.

You will probably be far from shocked to learn that HP and Dell are the biggest buyers of PC related semiconductors. ยต
