No delay to Conroe, Intel says

Share prices of AMD, Intel fall on price war fears

RUMOURS that there's a problem with the introduction of Intel's dual core 2 desktop chip, codenamed Conroe, are untrue, the company said.

Like its server sibling Woodcrest, the 65 nano nextgen product remains on track. If there was a problem with Conroe there would be bother with Woodcrest and there isn't.

Roadmaps we've seen show Intel remains on track to announce and ship product in July - but of course while August is the silly season for most of the world+dog, it's not for the channel and OEMs, who furiously work like the clappers to get product ready for back to school and all that jazz.

Meanwhile, the share price of AMD and Intel fell on Wall Street after Citigroup downgraded their outlook on CPU sales. Intel fell by 29 cents to $17.10, while AMD dipped by nearly a dollar to $27.03.

Citigroup believes the second quarter is tough for both firms and that a price war throws further confusion into the market. As we reported some weeks ago, Intel has been clearing its inventory to make way for the introduction of nextgen chips like Conroe, Woodcrest and Merom.

Intel continues to bang the drum for Woodcrest. It claimed that a two way Woodcrest/Bensley combination called "Junior" beat up a four way AMD Opteron four way machine called "Shredder".
