One in four US computers infected
MALWARE INFECTS more than 25 per cent of US computers according to an OECD study into online crime.
The report, with the original title Malicious Software (malware): a Security Threat to the Internet Economy, says that a cybercrime wave has scattered malware like electronic cluster bombs throughout US systems.
Cybercrime is a potentially serious threat to the internet economy, the study warned and claims that organisations involved in fighting the problem were about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
It said that over the last 20 years, malware has evolved from occasional 'exploits' to a global multi-million-dollar criminal industry. As the criminals get wealthier they are able to invest in larger engines of destruction.
More than 59 million users in the US have spyware or other types of malware on their computers, the OECD report claimed. µ

Personnally I think the title of the article should be "ONLY One in four US computers infected", although sammi makes an excellent point :)

But seriously, doesn't anyone else think that 25% is a rather low estimate?
Malware has real tricky life. You Get one, Maybe Rootkit. it starts blasting everything in your network & isp network. Maybe 99.9% resist, yet some fall. They start spreading malware. Over Time: Cleansing companies come up with Cleaner, You get rid of Malware or Break its Turbulent Heart. However, Heres Rube: All those other computers infested now come back at you with there modified form of malware, starting variations of problem , Again & again. Plus any other stuff weak system fell for.

You forget to cleanse daily, malware builds, system clogs, More malware returns & its perpetual never ending cycle. Run just to Break Equipment.

There is NO final Solution to Malware Problem. Jails, Anti Malware, NO Matter. At Some point it starts & then expands till, well your: house of Infected & Damned.

I would have thought the number of computers infected would be inline with the installed base of Windoz. Before any balmertards have a tantrum, it of course it is upto and INCLUDING their crown jewels... "Viruses - Intruders - Spyware - Trojans - Adware"
I just love it how these studies toss about imaginary numbers as though they were established facts. It seems no one today is able to separate fact from opinion. 

What I wonder, is why no one challenges these silly claims. 

25%, 91%? Why not 1000%? That'd get their attention. So what if it's impossible. It's all about spin not fact!

Unfortunately that could mean just about anything. Those companies that sell you anti-malware software routinely count every browser cookie as a malicious threat.

The more "malware" they find on your system, the more you "need" to give them your money.
quite useful when cold steeping and I'm expecting chocolate bunnies coming over to my flat. I don't know why everyone disparages chocolate teapots. Seems logical to use and get my peanut butter cups sorted.

This article points to users infected with malware, but it doesn't tell us
1) how users are getting it - is it from visiting regular normal sites? Everyone knows not to visit xx sites without taking risks!
2) what solutions are there to malware detection and prevention?
Now you'll open the door for my government to 'protect me', by constantly monitoring my computer.
