THE OLD MAN OF Open Software days, Richard Stallman, has hit out at software firms which try to tie kids into proprietary kit.

Speaking to The Hindu, Stallman described digital rights management (DRM) as a component of software which multinationals want to lock kids into.

The fact that the state of Kerala is using open source struck Stallman as good, he told the newspaper. He said that teaching students to use proprietary software locked them into a state of helpless dependency.

Stallman was speaking to The Hindu subsequent to the fourth international GPL conference in Bangalore, South India.
