PS3 price drop only a matter of time

Howard Stringer thinking how to sting Wii
Friday, 15 June 2007, 14:24
IN AN INTERVIEW in the Financial Times, the CEO of Sony, Howard Stringer was caught saying that the company is preparing a price drop for the Playstation 3, with the only real question being just how much the company will shave from its current price tag.

Sony's CEO didn't say when this price but happen, but Yuletide shopping frenzy was hailed as the time when Sony should start kicking the competitions' heads. It does not take a genie to figure out that price drop will happen sometimes during Q4'07. Reason for enthusiasm is rather simple: Sony claims uptake in sales of PSP after its recent price-drop, so it should be the same thing with PS3.

So far, PS3 has failed to take the lead in console battle, which is lead by somewhat unexpected product: Nintendo Wii decided to cater with mainstream audience and capture the social element, causing grief for hardcore/enthusiast-oriented consoles from Microsoft and Sony. Who will finish this year in the lead? It remains to be seen, but somehow Nintendo is still in pole position to do it, price cut or not. ยต
