Google distributes ads within widgets

New way to annoy punters

SEARCH OUTFIT Google is to distribute ads within "widgets".

Starting from today, the Mountain View-based outfit will allow commercialised widgets from its website.

Google isn't the first to try to commercialise widgets. The Vole, Apple, Facebook and Yahoo have all had a crack at it.

Google's advertising widgets will appear on the thousands of Web sites that participate in its Internet marketing network.

Like text-based ad links, Google plans to show the commercial widgets only when they carry a message that will appeal to individual Web site visitors.

Advertisers choose were to display their widgets, based on a Web site's demographics and other factors such as the location of the computer connected to the Internet.
