AMD picks up Intel price war gauntlet

Tweedledum and Tweedledee prepare for another battle
Thursday, 20 July 2006, 12:21
TAIWANESE WIRE Digitimes reckons that AMD will further slash its prices next week to compete with Intel price cuts on a wide range of its existing Pentium 4 based processors.

According to the wire, AMD had planned to cut prices on its Athlon 64 X2 chips by 46 per cent, but now it's upped the percentage cuts to 55 per cent.

Intel's introduction of Core Duo 2 desktop and notebook processors will precipitate price slashing on existing Pentium Ds and Celerons, as we reported some time ago.

The firm needs to clear its inventory of the existing "Netbust" technology out of the way as it starts to ramp its Conroe and Merom chips. Our information is that that ramp will be rather a slow one, but nevertheless time is on Intel's side. It has to clear the decks on existing SKUs and may as well wage a price war while it's doing that. µ
