US chip industry threatened by aliens

Technology leadership not guaranteed
Wednesday, 16 March 2005, 11:27
THE SEMICONDUCTOR Industry Association (SIA) said it will release findings later today that show United States leadership in technology is in jeopardy.

Craig Barrett from Intel, Steve Appleton from Micron, and a number of US academics will put forward arguments urging action be taken to stem the brain and potential cash drain.

George Scalise, president of the SIA, said: "US technology leadership is not guaranteed. It will be mainted only as long as we effectively invest. The SIA is calling for a concerted national effort to increase the resources devoted to R&D in the physical sciences."

He continued: "This effort must involve industry, academia and the federal and state governments to ensure continued US leadership."

Steve-appleton-from-micronScalise added: "While most scientists believe that advances in semiconductor technology can continue on pace with Moore's Law for another 10 to 15 years, there are physical, economic and technological limits that will end our ability to continue progress using current technology." µ
