Hope springs eternal in the Dramurai’s breast

THE SPOT market in DRAM chips is showing an extraordinary movement in prices. But don’t be disappointed if you’re a buyer of memory, because the thingie are still as cheap as, er, chips.

According to DRAM Exchange, spot prices rose by between 15 to 20 per cent.

This is good news for the makers of memory, but it’s not great news. Because, according to the memory watching site, in the first quarter of this year DDR2 512Mbit parts will reach $1.

As the site points out, if these components fall below $1, as they have done during the last year from time to time, it’s hardly worth switching the fabs on. µ
