Spansion teams up with Chinese fab giant

No foundry boundary as SMIC tools up
Wednesday, 24 October 2007, 11:46

FLASH FIRM Spansion said it signed a deal with PRC foundry SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation) to fab up its chips.

SMIC will make 65 nanometre "Mirrorbit" flash for Spansion using 12-inch wafers at its fabs.

The two firms have signed a memo of understanding which means SMIC will be able to sell the flash into "selected segments" of the burgeoning Chinese market.

Spansion will give SMIC a licence to make 90 nano chips too, and also hopes SMIC will make quad products too.

The deal means Spansion will have wafer fab plants in China. µ
