OLPC hopes punters will buy two, keep one

Charity begins at home
Mon Sep 24 2007, 08:54
THE ONE Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project is hoping that people in developed countries will buy two of the $180 machines and take only one home.

The big idea is that the project will build a pool of thousands of donated laptops which could be given to developing countries.

It would also offset the problem caused by the fact that the project is starting to get too expensive for third word governments to give to kids.

It is also hoped that such a scheme will mean that the laptops' manufacturer, Quanta Computer will get closer to its 3 million order production levels.

The buy two, keep one, scheme will run for two weeks in November.

Thailand, Uruguay, Nigeria, Brazil, Libya and Rwanda are among the countries that could be in the first wave of laptop customers, although the sales will begin in the US and Canada first.
