Pickaxe-wielding web rage attacker gets two years

Gibbons in a funk
Fri Nov 17 2006, 13:57
AS YOU MAY REMEMBER, Britain's first ever case of 'Web rage' was reported not too long ago. Now, perpetrator Paul Gibbons, the web rager, has been sentenced to just over two years in prison.

The rage attack came about after Gibbons was insulted in a chatroom by assaultee John Jones - Gibbons and a friend travelled all the way from his home in South London to Clacton where Jones lived before beating him with a pickaxe handle.

Gibbons admitted the unlawful wounding of Jones last month, following the decision by the prosecution not to go ahead with attempted murder charges, reports the Beeb.

The case serves as a warning to those carelessly posting about personal information willy nilly, reckons coppper Jean-Marc Bazzoni. "This case highlights the dangers of internet chatrooms, particularly with regards to giving personal details that will allow other users to discover home addresses," he said.

Feel free to discuss this on the INQ's forum, where home addresses and insults will be exchanged freely. µ
